THE BULGARIAN STUDIES ASSOCIATION IS HONORED TO PRESENT THE BSA AWARD FOR LIFETIME CONTRIBUTION TO ANISSAVA MILTENOVA, PROFESSOR, DR. HABIL., AND LONGTIME SCHOLAR AT THE INSTITUTE OF LITERATURE, BULGARIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES ( NOW EMERITA).

Prof. Miltenova served as Chair of the Department of Old Bulgarian Literature (2000–2020). Her work has made a profound impact in the fields of medieval Slavic and Bulgarian literature, including:

  • the typology and structure of medieval manuscript collections;
  • transformations of genres within the Byzantine–Slavic cultural sphere;
  • studies of apocryphal, parenetic, and monastic texts; and
  • digital approaches to the analysis and processing of medieval Slavic

 

She is the author of seven monographs and over 180 scholarly articles, and is one of the leading editors of История на българската средновековна литература (History of Bulgarian Medieval Literature), Sofia: Iztok-Zapad, 2008; 2nd ed. 2009. Together with Prof. David Birnbaum and Prof. Andrej Boyadzhiev, she co-initiated the pioneering project Repertorium of Old Bulgarian Literature and Letters (1995–present, http://repertorium.obdurodon.org), which continues to serve as an invaluable resource for Slavic scholars worldwide. Prof Miltenova served as a of Chairman of the Commission ‘Computer processing of Slavic manuscripts and old printed books’ at the International Committee of Slavists (1998–2003), and remains a member of the Commission. She is the founding editor of the journals Българистика / Bulgaristica (2000–) and Scripta & e-Scripta (2003–, https://e-scripta.eu).

For two consecutive terms (2009–2010, 2011–2012), Prof. Miltenova served as Vice-President of the Bulgarian Studies Association, serving with presidents Cynthia Vakareliyska and Martha Forsyth. She also served on the Council for Bulgarian studies abroad at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences from 1995 to 2012.

Prof. Miltenova’s distinguished career has been recognized with multiple honors, including the “Pythagoras” Grand Award of the Republic of Bulgaria’s Ministry of Education, Youth and Science (2009) for the best scientific team; and a Special Distinction from the Institute of Literature, BAS in 2022, for outstanding scholarly achievement.

The BSA celebrates Prof. Anissava Miltenova’s lifelong dedication to advancing Bulgarian and Slavic studies, and for her remarkable contributions to the international academic community.
