March 6, 2026 | Online Event
11:30 AM–1:00 PM Eastern Time (Ohio/ET)
The Bulgarian Studies Association is proud to partner with The Ohio State University, whose Center for Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies is hosting the online event “Contested Pasts: Memory, Culture, and Politics in Bulgaria.”
The conversation-panel will feature:
Prof. Yana Hashamova (The Ohio State University)
Prof. Ana Luleva (Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Studies with Ethnographic Museum, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences)
with commentary by
Prof. Tanya Ivanova-Sullivan (UCLA).
This timely scholarly conversation will explore how Bulgaria’s socialist past is remembered, interpreted, and contested in contemporary political and cultural contexts. Bringing together leading scholars in Bulgarian studies, the event examines memory culture, revived traditions, public commemorations, and protest movements within the broader framework of post-socialist transformations.
The event will take place online via Zoom. Registration details are available on The Ohio State University’s event page.
We warmly invite BSA members, friends, and anyone interested in Bulgarian studies to join us for this important discussion on memory, culture, and politics in Bulgaria.
